Jump to Movement:
The sacroiliac and iliofemoral joints (together what we call the "hips") work together to move the body at it's midpoint - the pelvis. Since this can be done by either moving the upper body or lower body, there are two different "types" of several of the following 14 movements:
(Anatomy Animations Powered By Muscle & Motion)
Hip Extension - Type 1
Bending your upper body backwards at the hip (without your legs moving)
Hip Extension - Type 2
Bending your leg backwards at the hip (without your upper body moving)
Hip Hyperextension
Bending your body backwards at the hip past the neutral position (past where your legs and upper body are aligned)
Hip Flexion - Type 1
Bending your upper body forwards at the hip (without your legs moving)
Hip Flexion - Type 2
Bending your legs forwards at the hip (without your upper body moving)
Hip Abduction
Moving your leg away from your body laterally (to the side)
Hip Adduction
Bringing your leg in medially (to the center)
Posterior Pelvic Tilt
Rotating your hips so that the front of the pelvis rotates up, and the back of the pelvis rotates down
Anterior Pelvic Tilt
Bending your leg backwards at the hip (without your upper body moving)
Supine Posterior Pelvic Tilt
Performing PPT as described above while lying on your back
Hip External Rotation
Rotating your leg laterally (to the side) at the hip
Hip External Rotation with Extension
Rotating your leg laterally (to the side) at the hip while simultaneously extending your hip
Hip Internal Rotation
Rotating your leg medially (towards the center of your body) at the hip
Seated Hip Internal Rotation
Performing hip internal rotation (as just explained) while both the hip and knee are in a flexed position
