Why I Wrote This Book...

Why I Wrote This Book...

Training the human body is like constructing a large, complex building. You can try to jump straight into the "fancy" and "fun" work by crafting high-arching ceilings, designing game and theater rooms, employing the latest technology for your heating, cooling, and security systems, and so on. However, none of that will matter if you neglected to first build a strong, solid foundation on which to build the rest. Sure, you'll still be able to get a lot done and will even start to see some fast results. But if you ignored or skimped on the foundations, your work will be highly inefficient. You'll have to constantly be re-designing and re-working areas because you didn't fully understand what it was all built on (such as how much load the base material could handle), and sooner or later it will all come crashing down.

Similarly, far too many people dive headfirst into weight lifting without fully understanding its foundations; most importantly the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, bones, tendons & ligaments) and how it functions. They simply do what they see other people doing, or what some online fitness guru said they should do. And since that guy is "big"... he must know what he's talking about. Right..? Even extremely advanced lifters will get so caught up in their routines and in copying what they've seen other "successful" weightlifters do that they don't realize when they're violating fundamental principles, or even stop to consider that there may be a better way.

Excellence and success in any pursuit requires mastery of the fundamentals. Vince Lombardi, a legendary NFL football coach, would begin training camp by teaching his players what a football was.  John Wooden, an NCAA basketball coach, would start each season teaching his players how to properly tie their shoes. His teams won twice as many championships as the next most-successful coach in history.

Once you've mastered the basics, you can THEN start to apply them in ever more complex and effective ways. Sometimes after I've taught a lesser-known exercise science principle or demonstrated a new technique I developed by applying fundamental principles in novel ways, I'll get comments such as:

His teams won twice as many championships as the next most-successful coach in history.

Once you've mastered the basics, you can THEN start to apply them in ever more complex and effective ways. Sometimes after I've taught a lesser-known exercise science principle or demonstrated a new technique I developed by applying fundamental principles in novel ways, I'll get comments such as:

"Bahh, none of that really makes a difference! Just go to the gym and lift some weights, it's as simple as that!"

"A contraction is a contraction, it doesn't matter how you do it!"

Or, one of my favorites, "Arnold Schwarzenegger [or insert the name of some other steroid-using bodybuilder] didn't do that, so either it doesn't work or is unnecessary!"

I'll often respond with a parable, explaining how it's possible for someone to dig a trench using a dull spoon if they work at it hard and long enough. But that doesn't change the fact that they could have achieved that same result in MUCH less time (and with much less stress on the body) if they had used a shovel. And it would no doubt look better as well. Just because a method "works" doesn't mean that it should be used, much less that it's the best method, or even that it's safe. Most professional bodybuilders are ticking time-bombs for career-ending injuries, and their physiques are primarily achieved via "chemical intervention", NOT superior technique. Sometimes it takes years, or even decades, for the lack of a solid foundation to start manifesting itself (and that's particularly true for the shoulders)... but it always will in the end!

Whether you're a novice who's just getting started with resistance training, or a 40-year gym veteran with a Ph.D. in exercise science, this book will significantly enhance your understanding and provide you with a rock-solid foundation for shoulder training. It will start with the fundamentals and build to more advanced concepts and techniques for all three deltoid heads, allowing you to make necessary adjustments and optimize all shoulder-related workouts that you perform for the rest of your life. You won't have to wonder if what an influencer or trainer says is true, because you'll be able to analyze the fundamentals behind any aspect of shoulder training yourself!

When you not only know WHAT a muscle region does, but also fully understand WHY and HOW, you'll then be able to take full control of your own training, be confident in the efficacy (and safety) of your workouts, and propel your physical fitness to the next level. That is what this book will do for you.

Let the gains begin!!
